Building our own Reef Cage

No matter how careful we all are when visiting islands inside coral atolls, the fact is damage to that infrastructure will take place.

It behoves us all to do something to help restore that damage and we have been happy to play our part.
Marine Savers, one of the world’s most successful reef propagation projects in the world runs a pioneering programme at each of the Four Seasons Resorts in the Maldives.
At both Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru and Kuda Haraa they and the guests who visit sponsor a reef transplanting programme.
The process involves working with the resorts marine biologists attaching live coral fragments onto a coral friendly frame produced locally in nearby islands.
Once completed the rather barren looking reef cage is placed into the water in an area that will help boast existing reef habitats and generate new ones.
It is a gloriously simple system that does not end there.  Once involved, sponsors can check in to the web and monitor the progress of their cage, which has its own unique number and is photographed every six months and the image uploaded.
Example of what our cage may look like in the future
It is easy to become involved and the donations asked for a reasonable.  US$150 buys a small frame and a large one $500.  We built the middle sized frame costing $300.
Over the next few years we will tune in regularly and will post the progress of our reef cage here on the blog.
You need not wait to visit Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru or Kuda Haraa to buy into the programme it can be done on line now.  Then in a little while you can visit the resorts and dive down to see the difference you are making to help the Maldivian Reef.
