An Assignment in Gibraltar

Gibraltar seen from the Top of the Rock

Working for SuperYacht Business magazine we have been writing a series of articles in which we look at the different territories around the world that offer superyachts the opportunity of flagging under the Red ensign. First off was the Isle of Man. The current edition (issue 15 April 2010) of the magazine carries the article we wrote about the British Virgin Islands.

Last weekend we were guests of the Gibraltar Tourist Board and flew to the rock on Saturday. The new issue of SuperYacht Business is expected to carry our report about the territory.

Our first assignment was to visit the Gibraltar International Boat Show, which ran from 8th to 11th of April. Now in its second year and held at the newly completed Ocean Village Marina, the event is shaping up well in its showcasing of leisure activities to local people.

We interviewed the Deputy Chief Minister, the Admiralty Marshall and the Maritime Administrator who told us of plans to create a single ship registry. This will combine the currently separate commercial ship registry and the pleasure yacht registry.

We met many of the top shipping lawyers who are hugely knowledgeable when it comes to explaining why and how to register a superyacht in Gibraltar. We visited the newly enhanced Queensway Quay Marina and toured some of the splendid new waterfront properties they have for sale.
