A new 19-Day “Grand Nile Journey” will explore iconic landmarks and lesser-known destinations along the River Nile
Viking Cruises is offering an in-depth exploration of Egypt’s ancient landmarks and lesser-known archaeological sites. Departures begin in 2028, featuring a 14-night Nile sailing aboard the all-suite Viking Ra.
The itinerary combines four hotel nights in Cairo with a 14-night voyage between Cairo and Aswan. Guests will discover celebrated monuments, ancient settlements and communities along the Nile.
In addition to Egypt’s famous attractions, the journey explores Middle Egypt’s archaeological treasures. These visits offer fresh perspectives on the civilisations, cultures and traditions that shaped the country.
Grand Nile Journey Explores Egypt’s Ancient History
The new Grand Nile Journey includes 17 guided tours, providing a comprehensive introduction to Egypt’s remarkable heritage.

Guests begin in Cairo, visiting the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Great Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum. The journey then follows the Nile southwards, revealing archaeological sites beyond Egypt’s familiar tourist trail.
Highlights include the Meidum Pyramid, an important landmark in the development of pyramid construction. Visitors will also explore the Noblemen’s Tombs at Beni Hasan, famous for their depictions of everyday life in ancient Egypt.

At Tell el-Amarna, guests can discover the remains of Pharaoh Akhenaten’s former royal capital. Meanwhile, a visit to Deir el-Muharraq monastery explores Egypt’s Coptic Christian heritage and traditions surrounding the Holy Family’s journey.
Luxor, Karnak and the Valley of the Kings
Further south, the itinerary showcases some of ancient Egypt’s most celebrated monuments.
Guests will visit the magnificent temples of Luxor and Karnak, alongside the royal tombs of the Valley of the Kings. The programme also includes the Temple of Seti I at Abydos.
In Aswan, travellers can explore the island temple complex of Philae. They will also discover the monumental temples of Abu Simbel and enjoy sailing aboard a traditional felucca.

Throughout the voyage, guests can admire the contrasting landscapes along the Nile. Lush riverbanks provide a striking contrast with the surrounding desert.
Extend Your Viking Nile Cruise
Viking offers several land extensions for travellers wishing to explore beyond the Grand Nile Journey.
A two-night Cairo extension includes the services of a Viking Host, allowing more time to discover Egypt’s vibrant capital.
Alternatively, a five-night guided extension explores Morocco’s colourful markets and rich cultural heritage.
A four-night guided journey through Jordan visits the Dead Sea, Petra and Amman. This extension combines ancient wonders with the country’s dramatic landscapes.
These options allow guests to combine the Nile cruise with further exploration of North Africa or the Middle East.
Viking Ra: An Intimate Nile River Cruise Ship
The all-suite Viking Ra accommodates just 52 guests across 26 suites. Viking designed the vessel specifically for cruising the Nile.

Inspired by the company’s river and ocean ships, Viking Ra features the elegant Scandinavian styling associated with the brand.
Its intimate capacity offers a more personal experience while guests explore Egypt’s archaeological sites and riverside communities.
Viking Expands Its Egypt River Cruise Fleet
The Grand Nile Journey strengthens Viking’s growing presence in Egypt.
It complements the company’s existing 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary. Viking also offers a sold-out 12-day Total Eclipse on the Nile voyage in 2027, giving guests an opportunity to witness a total solar eclipse in Egypt.

Earlier in October 2026, Viking named two additional ships for its Egyptian operations: Viking Ptah and Viking Sekhmet.
The company now operates 10 vessels in Egypt and expects to receive four more by 2028.
Viking continues to expand its destination-focused cruises, combining cultural experiences with exploration of some of the world’s most historically significant waterways.
The new Grand Nile Journey adds a more extensive option for travellers seeking a deeper understanding of Egypt’s ancient civilisations and living traditions.
