Second Wind for 40 year old Sailing Cruise Ship

Windstar Cruises has completed a major refit of the oldest ship in their fleet giving her a second wind.  The 40 year old Wind Star returns to service with upgraded interiors, dining spaces and guest amenities.

Built in 1986 the 148-guest, motor sailing ship is the vessel that helped define modern sailing cruises.

With the second wind in her sails, the refurbished yacht now begins a new chapter, sailing itineraries around the world.

The refit forms part of Windstar’s wider Setting Sails initiative. This long-term programme upgrades the line’s Wind Class fleet while preserving each ship’s original character.  The project combines yacht-style design with improved comfort and modern onboard features.

Wind Star is the first Wind Class vessel to complete both refurbishment phases.  The other two ships in that class are Wind Spirit and Wind Surf.

Wind Surf will complete her second refurbishment phase in December 2026.  Meanwhile, Wind Spirit is scheduled to finish upgrades in March 2027.

40 years of sailing innovation

When Wind Star launched 40 years ago, she introduced a different cruise experience.  Guests enjoyed working sails, intimate spaces and a private yacht atmosphere. As a result, the ship helped shape the small-ship sailing market.

According to Stijn Creupelandt, the refurbishment honours the yacht’s heritage while preparing it for future voyages.  He said the upgrades preserve the vessel’s character while enhancing every part of the guest experience.

New dining venues

The second wind refurbishment phase introduces a complete redesign of several onboard areas.

The yacht’s signature restaurant, Amphora, now features updated flooring, wall finishes and ceiling details.  New banquette seating and modern furnishings also create a more refined dining atmosphere.

The Veranda dining venue now includes a refreshed interior and redesigned buffet arrangement.  These updates improve guest flow while creating a more relaxed dining environment.

Staterooms gain modern technology and comfort upgrades

Guest accommodation now includes upgraded upholstered headboards, integrated lighting and bedside charging points.

These improvements build on earlier enhancements introduced during phase one.

Previous upgrades included:

  • Starlink internet connectivity
  • New televisions with on-demand entertainment
  • Enhanced onboard technology
  • Redesigned Owner’s Suite

Public spaces receive extensive refresh

Earlier work modernised several of the yacht’s most visible areas.

Refreshed venues include:

  • Lobby spaces
  • Compass Rose Lounge
  • Yacht Club Café
  • Pool deck
  • Spa and fitness centre

The yacht also features new teak decking, upgraded lighting and advanced audio systems.  In addition, Windstar partnered with Miami-based Fountainhead Art to install commissioned artwork across the ship.  Together, these changes strengthen the line’s signature “home at sea” atmosphere.
