A new study has revealed a growing demand for meaningful and nostalgic travel experiences. The research from Marella Cruises shows Brits still view the 1990s as the golden age of holidays.
The study surveyed 2,000 UK adults and found that 35% believe holidays in the 1990s created stronger memories than modern trips. Many respondents linked the decade to immersive travel experiences and fewer everyday distractions.
The 1990s remain popular thanks to cultural icons such as Spice Girls and the early rise of the internet. Gen X travellers aged 45 to 54 showed the strongest preference for holidays during the 1990s. Many remembered a time when people focused more on experiences and spent less time on screens. Meanwhile, the 2000s ranked as the second most popular decade for travel memories.

By comparison, only 6% chose the 2010s and 8% selected the 2020s. However, 34% of respondents said holidays have changed little over time.
Meaningful Travel Experiences Matter
The research also explored what creates the perfect holiday today. Quality time with loved ones remains a key reason to travel for 32% of respondents. Another 32% said they holiday to relax and reset mentally.
However, technology increasingly affects the travel experience. Nearly 38% said constant screen use interrupts socialising while away. As a result, many travellers now seek holidays that encourage real connection.
Escape From Digital Distractions
Cruising continues to appeal to travellers searching for entertainment and relaxation. According to the study, 14% of respondents associate cruises with off-screen entertainment and social activities. Additionally, 12% believe time at sea helps them disconnect from daily stress. Another 16% said cruises involve less hassle than traditional holidays.

Travellers also value opportunities to connect with others during a trip. The survey found that 25% feel more relaxed and confident while on holiday.
Meanwhile, 7% met a lifelong partner abroad. Another 15% still keep in touch with people they met while travelling. And, 14% said holidays helped form lasting friendships.
Modern holidaymakers increasingly value genuine interaction over digital connection. Around 24% want holidays that encourage socialising without apps or technology.
Live entertainment attracted 18% of respondents. Adults-only experiences also appealed to 18%.
Meanwhile, slower-paced wellness breaks ranked highly among preferred travel styles.
Marella Cruises Reaches 30
The findings arrive as Marella Cruises celebrates its 30th anniversary. The cruise line plans a nostalgic entertainment programme inspired by the 1990s. Guests can expect music, quizzes and themed onboard events.

Chris Hackney said the anniversary celebrations will appeal to both loyal and new cruise guests. He added that the cruise line’s all-inclusive service continues to attract travellers seeking stress-free holidays.
Despite changing travel habits, simple pleasures remain important. The most popular ideal holiday moment involves watching the sunset over the sea with a drink. Around 22% chose this experience as their perfect travel memory.
Seeing loved ones happy and relaxed ranked second at 18%. Meanwhile, 10% said doing nothing together creates the best holiday experience.
