Yacht.com surveyed 1,006 Americans to explore attitudes toward free yacht and cruise trips. Respondents ranged from 18 to 77 years old and represented a wide income spread.
The study shows that 94% would accept a free yacht trip, even though only 13% have sailed on a yacht. Interest in luxury boating remains extremely high across all demographics.

Mediterranean Top Yacht Destination
Most Americans would head straight for the Mediterranean, with 40% naming it their preferred destination. The Caribbean follows at 20%, while Northern Europe ranks third at 8%.
Travellers would stay at sea for 14 nights on average. Most would bring a partner or a friend. Gen Z prefers shorter trips, while Gen X wants longer voyages.
Cruises attract broader experience. 42% of Americans have taken one, compared with only 13% who have been on a yacht. However, 90% would take a free cruise, which is still less than the 94% who would accept a free yacht trip.
Americans also favour yachts in direct comparisons. 81% choose a free yacht trip over a private jet, while 69% prefer yachting to a free Disney World visit.
What Americans Want Most Onboard
Food and service dominate expectations. 31% want a private chef above all else. Another 24% prioritise a full crew. A panoramic underwater lounge attracts 8% of respondents.

Exploration ranks as the most appealing element of yachting. “Fun” comes second. Travellers look forward to marine exploration, privacy, relaxation, and onboard celebrations.
Status ranks low. Only 10% care about the prestige of being seen on a yacht.
Price to Pay
Cost remains the biggest barrier. 83% say price prevents them from booking a yacht holiday. Time constraints, weather concerns, and fear of scams also play a role.
Americans say they would pay $4,181 for a one-week private yacht trip. That figure rises sharply with income. High earners would spend $9,311. Lower-income respondents would spend $2,764.
However, they believe a one-week trip should cost $11,931 on average. Real charter rates usually range from $10,000 to over $1 million, depending on yacht size.
