Not since the acquisition of Perini Navi by The Italian Sea Group in January 2022 has a new sailing yacht been ordered.
It is possible that, following the sinking of the 60 metre Bayesain, potential Perini Navi owners have put their desires of ownership on hold. They await the outcome of the MAIB inquiry.
A preliminary report issued by the MAIB suggested that design issues may have been a factor in the yachts sudden sinking.
Virtually “unsinkable.”
Remarks made by Giovanni Costantino, the CEO of the Italian Sea Group at the time of the sinking may not have endeared the brand to the superyacht fraternity. Nor will they have helped the sales effort.
At the time of the sinking in August 2024 he described Bayesain as “One of the safest boats in the world”. He insisted that the yacht was virtually “unsinkable.”
Costantino went on to strongly assert that the sinking was due entirely to human error. He stated that it was caused by “a series of indescribable, unreasonable errors by the crew.” Rather than any design defect.
But now, a year or so later, The Italian Sea Group has announced the delivery of the 60-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht. Katana is the 8th-largest yacht ever to have been built by the Viareggio shipbuilder.
Perini Navi brand entered into bankruptcy.
The yacht was original started in 2015. But construction was paused in 2021 when the Perini Navi brand entered into bankruptcy.
Her construction restarted in 2022 when the yacht entered the outfitting stage. Now she has been delivered to her owners
Built to the exterior design of Perini Navi her interiors were designed by the French designer Rémi Tessier. They were built by the German outfitter Metrica.
Naval architecture is by Ron Holland Design.
Her all-aluminium hull and superstructure has been paired with carbon fibre masts and rigging. They were supplied by Southern Spars.
With a beam of 11.4 metres, a draught of 12.3 metres the yacht has a gross tonnage of 491 tons. And she is equipped with a retractable keel. This allows for improved performance in shallow waters.
A dynamic positioning system allows the yacht to maintain her position without deploying anchors.
She is powered by 2 MTU engines, giving the motorsailer a top speed of 15.5 knots under power alone. She carries 47,000 litres of fuel on board.
