Margaret Whittaker the Owner of Pearl Yachts has Died

Pearl Yachts has announced the passing of Margaret Whittaker OBE.  She died in Palma de Mallorca at the age of 77.

Margaret was a remarkable entrepreneur.  She founded Slimming World in 1969 and became the owner of Pearl Yachts in 2003. In 2007, she purchased and subsequently revitalised Son Amar, an events and live performances venue in Mallorca.

Her business acumen made her a multimillionaire, but it was not always like that.  She built the multimillion Slimmer’s World empire from scratch. Starting in a scout hut she had just the £200 she had borrowed from friends.

She was awarded the OBE for service to the public having raised over £2 million for charity.

Her visionary leadership shaped each of her ventures and she leaves behind her a lasting legacy of success and innovation.

Margaret’s journey with Pearl Yachts began when she and her husband, Tony Whittaker, invested in the company. They brought to it, their vast experience and passion for motor cruising.

Value and pioneering spirit

Margaret’s values and pioneering spirit were a great source of inspiration in the growth and success of Pearl. Under her influence, the company evolved into a renowned boutique yacht builder, producing a range of high-quality yachts admired worldwide.

Born illegitimately, she was adopted just 10 days after her birth.  Years later when she became rich and famous, she sought out her birth mother and bought her a house in which to live.

In 2022, Margaret was honoured with The Norns Award for Businesswoman in the Yachting Industry of the year. It recognised her unwavering belief, vision, and passion.

Legacy will endure

Margaret leaves Pearl in an enviable position.  Her legacy will endure in every yacht bearing the Pearl name. And her example and values will continue to inspire the Pearl Yachts family.

Pearl Yachts Managing Director Iain Smallridge, together with the Board of Directors and all employees, extends the company’s deepest sympathies to her family and loved ones during this difficult time.
