Surf, Turf, and Tarmac

A trio of great books of interest to the Motor Caravanner are being bundled together as ‘Surf, Turf, and Tarmac.’ And they make a great stocking filler for those who like us travel the highways and byways of Great Britain.

Surf refers to The Coastal Café Guide while Turf suggests The Farm Shop Guide.  Tarmac refers to The Extra Mile.  All are books that should be in the glovebox of every touring campervan or motorhome.

Tarmac

Published by Printslinger, the first of the three books to hit the bookstores was The Extra Mile.  The brainchild of former superyacht industry publisher, Kerry O’Neill, the Extra Mile helps you avoid motorway services. It helps find good food on the move and supports the local food revolution.

After yet another in a long line of bland ‘lattes’ and limp sandwiches next to thundering motorways, Kerry began to wonder if there wasn’t another way. In rejection of soulless, expensive services, she sought out local alternatives, uncovering places that offer better local food

The book offers a dependable list of independent outlets, serving good food worthy of a short detour. Hand-selected they are all no more than 15 minutes’ drive from a main road junction.

The book includes stop-offs for those who love fresh-grown and unfussy, organic and original, or gourmet and gastro. Over 275 pit-stops and places to break long journeys are list across mainland Britain.

Turf

The Farm Shop Guide written by Laura Collacott and Eleanor Weeks-Bell gathers Britain’s best farm shops (and their cafés and restaurants) into one useful guide. It makes a great Christmas gift for foodies, families, those who prefer to buy local, and everyone who likes to know where their food comes from.

The Farm Shop Guide features 165 places to enjoy fresh local food whether you eat in, take away, or buy to stock up for the week ahead. Find farm-to-fork cafés and restaurants, fresh groceries, PYO places and farmers’ markets across mainland Britain. Includes contact info and symbols for Parking, Dog-friendly, Vegan, Click and Collect and much more.

Surf

The third book in the Surf Turf and Tarmac Trio is The Coastal Café Guide.  New this year it is a café guide for foodlovers who travel Britain’s coastline.  Release in July 2024, it makes a good gift for beach lovers, coast-path walkers, surfers, paddle-boarders, seafood fans, water sports enthusiasts, holidaymakers, and those travelling with families and dogs.

It lists around 150 cafés, restaurants, beach bars, seafood cabins, and pubs, on or near the coast.

While offering good value when bundled together as Surf, Turf, and Tarmac, the books can all be purchased singly from the Printslinger online bookshop
