The drive from Nizwa to Al Jabel Al Akhdar takes about 45 minutes using a 4 wheel drive vehicle.
It is not permitted to fly into the area by helicopter because it is a military zone. Entry on to the mountain road is through a police check point whose function it is to check the state of the vehicle, its suitability for the journey and the credentials of the driver.
Our Toyota supplied by Arabica Orient Tours passed inspection and with Muneer Al-Balushi approved as our driver and off we sped.
It’s a journey not for the feint hearted with steep hairpin bends solid rock on one side and sheer drops into oblivion on the other!
