The inaugural Pendennis Cup was held in 2008 to coincide with Pendennis Shipyard’s 20th anniversary. Held every two years the event is organised by Pendennis and racing is managed by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club.
The next in the series takes place from 2nd-7th July 2012. The regatta promises to provide four dramatic days of racing with the growing fleet including 14 classic and modern sailing yachts totalling a remarkable 450m+ in length overall. The largest yacht is Athos who, at 62m, will certainly be an exciting challenger to last year’s Cup winner Adela (55.5m)
The 2008 Pendennis Cup winner, Altair, will be returning to Falmouth next year in an attempt to reclaim her title from Adela.
Other yachts confirmed are Eleonora, Gaia, Mariette, Mariquita (one of the oldest participants built in 1911), Windrose, Breakaway, Bare Necessities, Tomahawk, Mikado, Zarik and Velacarina.
Sponsors for next year include a variety of yachting industry and lifestyle brands including:
- Aston Martin
- Burgess
- Dubois
- E-Tech Group
- Ince & Co
- Lewmar
- Medaire
- North Sails
- Port Pendennis Marina
- Tim Haynes Ltd
Yachting World and Supersail World will be Media partners.
The Pendennis Cup has grown in popularity year on year. In 2010 Falmouth saw seven yachts competing in three different classes. For 2012 we anticipate at least double the number of yachts, bringing over 400 crew as well as VIP guests and a wealth of national and international media to our shores.
