After a season sailing the waters of New Zealand for the summer in a bid to escape the cyclone season of the tropics, the 90 metre Athena one of the world’s largest private sailing yachts, is on her way to Whangarei near Auckland in New Zealand for a super-sized makeover.
The 90m three-masted schooner, owned by American billionaire and Netscape founder Jim Clark, is believed to be worth between $70 and $100 million.
The refit will take place at Orams Marine Services where Managing Director Craig Park says the whole boat is being re-painted and the interior re-varnished.
“It’s the biggest superyacht to be refitted in New Zealand,” he says. “It’s a full re-paint, it’s the first since the launch. “It’s really a cosmetic re-fit although all engines and generators will be serviced.”
