Motorhome Insurance Claims Rise During Late Summer

MotorCaravan owners should take extra care as late summer and early autumn bring the busiest period for motorhome insurance claims.

New analysis from Ripe Motorhome Insurance reveals that 41% of claims involve another vehicle or object. Meanwhile, 49% relate to windscreen damage. The average claim costs £606.

With the peak staycation season in full swing, drivers can reduce risks by adopting safer driving habits and carrying out simple vehicle checks.

Stay Vigilant Behind the Wheel

Mel Savage, Head of Underwriting Operations at Ripe Motorhome Insurance, said:

“Late summer through to autumn is the busiest time of year for motorhome insurance claims. Windscreen damage and collisions with other vehicles remain among the most common incidents.

“As peak staycation season gets underway, both new and experienced motorhome drivers should stay vigilant. Watch other road users, anticipate hazards and take extra care behind the wheel. These simple steps can help prevent accidents and support a safe, stress-free trip.”

Six Ways to Reduce Your Risk

1. Leave More Space Between Vehicles

Motorhomes weigh more than cars and need longer to stop.

Always leave a larger gap between your vehicle and the traffic ahead. Extra space gives you more time to react if another driver brakes suddenly or a hazard appears.

2. Complete Essential Checks Before Every Journey

Take a few minutes to inspect your motorhome before setting off.

Check your tyres, lights and fluid levels. Then confirm roof vents are closed, the side step is retracted and external lockers are secure.

Finally, make sure bikes, awnings and other accessories are firmly attached. These quick checks can prevent damage and improve safety.

3. Prepare for Changing Weather

British weather can change without warning.

Check the forecast before you leave and monitor conditions throughout your journey. If heavy rain, strong winds or poor visibility develop, slow down and increase your stopping distance.

If conditions become unsafe, stop and continue only when it is safe.

During hot weather, travel in the cooler parts of the day where possible. Also, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

4. Inspect Your Windscreen

Nearly half of all motorhome insurance claims involve windscreen damage.

Before every trip, check for chips or small cracks. Minor damage can spread quickly after driving on rough roads or during sudden temperature changes.

Repairing a chip early often prevents the need for a full windscreen replacement.

5. Take Regular Breaks

Driving a motorhome requires more concentration than driving a standard car.

Plan regular stops during longer journeys. Stretch your legs, enjoy a drink or explore a nearby attraction before returning to the road.

Regular breaks reduce fatigue and help you stay alert.

6. Plan Your Route Carefully

Not every road suits a motorhome.

Narrow lanes, low bridges and weight restrictions can create expensive problems. Therefore, check your route before you leave.

A satellite navigation system designed for larger vehicles can also help you avoid unsuitable roads and unnecessary detours.

Small Precautions Can Save Hundreds of Pounds

Late summer remains one of the busiest periods for motorhome travel. Consequently, it also brings a higher risk of accidents and damage.

By carrying out basic checks, planning ahead and driving with extra care, motorhome owners can reduce the likelihood of making an insurance claim and enjoy a safer journey.
