What started in 2016 with just 25 Volkswagen campervans has become a global success story. Operating initially from Munich, Frankfurt and Hamburg, roadsurfer now runs around 100 locations across 16 countries.
As the company celebrates its tenth anniversary, it has established itself as the world’s leading provider of campervan and motorhome adventures.
Helping Drive the Campervan Revolution
During the past decade, roadsurfer has helped transform camper travel from a niche holiday option into a mainstream lifestyle choice.

The company became well known for its colourful Volkswagen campervans. More importantly, it inspired a new generation of travellers to embrace the freedom of the open road.
As a result, the term “roadsurfing” has become closely associated with flexible, experience-led travel. This trend reflects the growing popularity of camping and outdoor adventures around the world.
From Start-Up to Global Market Leader
roadsurfer’s growth has been remarkable. By 2022, the company had expanded its rental fleet to around 5,000 vehicles.

Today, it operates approximately 10,000 campervans and motorhomes across Europe and North America.
The company has continued to grow beyond the post-pandemic travel surge. Meanwhile, the wider camper travel industry expands by an estimated 8–10% each year.
Several milestones have supported this growth. First, roadsurfer added larger motorhomes to its fleet. It then expanded into France in 2019 before launching operations in North America.

Today, the company employs around 1,000 people worldwide. Since 2016, more than 420,000 travellers have enjoyed a roadsurfer adventure.
Campervan Holidays Become Part of Mainstream Travel
Booking trends show how campervan travel has matured.
Travellers now plan their holidays much further in advance. In 2026, the average booking lead time reached around 110 days.
By comparison, travellers booked around 80 days ahead in 2025. When roadsurfer launched in 2016, the average lead time was just 70 days.

These figures suggest that campervan holidays now sit alongside traditional beach, city and resort breaks in annual travel plans.
Families Remain roadsurfer’s Core Customers
The company’s customer profile has remained surprisingly consistent.
According to a 2025 customer analysis, families make up the largest group of customers. Around 30% travel with children.
In addition, 9% bring their dogs on holiday. Travellers aged 55 and over account for 12% of bookings.
Families generally choose larger campervans and motorhomes. Meanwhile, couples and groups of friends often prefer compact vans and fully equipped campervans.
Campervan Travel Offers Value and Flexibility
As flight and hotel costs continue to rise in 2026, roadsurfer has kept its summer rental prices unchanged from last year.

Consequently, campervan holidays remain an appealing option for travellers seeking greater flexibility and control over their budgets.
Peak-season rental rates start from £113 per night. However, prices vary depending on the vehicle, destination and travel dates.
Travellers can also benefit from seasonal promotions and discounted last-minute deals throughout the year.
UK, Italy and France Lead Destination Choices
British roadsurfers continue to favour destinations in the UK, Italy and France.

At the same time, Edinburgh, London and Milan ranked as the company’s most popular pick-up locations during the past year.
North America Emerges as Fastest-Growing Market
While Europe remains strong, North America is delivering the company’s fastest growth.
Demand increased by around 120% during 2025. Furthermore, more American travellers are discovering the appeal of the European campervan travel model.
As interest continues to grow, North America is expected to remain a major driver of roadsurfer’s future expansion.
