Devizes Backs Plans for New Canal-Side Motorhome Aire

Motorhome owners could soon enjoy a new overnight stop in the historic Wiltshire market town of Devizes.

Devizes Town Council has formally backed plans to create an Aire-style facility at The Wharf Car Park. The site sits beside the scenic Kennet and Avon Canal and could attract more touring motorhome visitors to the town.

Council leaders believe the project would support local businesses while making better use of existing parking facilities.

Three Dedicated Motorhome Spaces Proposed

The proposal emerged after the town council submitted representations to Wiltshire Council.

Under the pilot scheme, The Wharf Car Park would gain at least three dedicated motorhome spaces. However, councillors have suggested future expansion if demand proves strong.

The facility would operate separately from the main car park. It would cater specifically for self-contained motorhomes and caravans with onboard facilities.

Visitors could stay for up to 48 hours. The proposed charge is around £10 for a 24-hour stay.

Aire Would Follow Continental Model

Like many Aires across Europe, the Devizes facility would focus on short-term parking rather than camping.

As a result, visitors could not erect awnings or place tables and chairs outside their vehicles. Outdoor cooking would also remain prohibited.

These measures would help ensure the site operates as a parking area rather than a campsite.

Improved Visitor Services Under Consideration

Councillors are also exploring ways to improve facilities for visiting motorhome owners.

For example, the council could discuss access to existing grey water disposal facilities with the Canal & River Trust. Those facilities currently serve narrowboats using the canal.

Such improvements could make the Aire more attractive to touring visitors.

Study Highlights Economic Benefits

The proposal follows a feasibility study commissioned by Devizes Town Council and carried out by CAMpRA, the Campaign for Real Aires.

According to the council, the study identified a strong economic case for introducing an Aire in the town.

Councillors believe existing parking capacity would allow dedicated motorhome spaces without reducing current parking income. Furthermore, the Aire could create a new revenue stream while encouraging visitors to spend money locally.

Motorhome visitors often support independent shops, pubs, restaurants and attractions during their stays.

Growing Recognition of Motorhome Tourism

If approved, Devizes would join a growing number of UK destinations embracing motorhome tourism.

Across mainland Europe, Aires have provided affordable overnight parking for many years. In addition, they encourage travellers to visit local communities and support local economies.

For motorhome owners touring Wiltshire, a canal-side Aire in Devizes could become an attractive new stop in one of the county’s most historic market towns.
