Historic Steam Yacht Cangarda Relaunched

RMK Yachts has relaunched the historic steam yacht Cangarda following a meticulous restoration.

The project took place at the yard’s Istanbul facility.

After launch, the vessel transferred to the Rahmi Koç Museum.

The museum will display the yacht permanently in Haliç, Istanbul’s historic Golden Horn.

Consequently, Cangarda will serve as a centrepiece celebrating maritime engineering and heritage.

Rare Survivor from the Golden Age of Steam Yachting

Shipbuilders originally launched Cangarda in the United States in 1901.

The yacht emerged during the golden age of steam-powered private vessels.

Today, historians regard her as one of the finest surviving steam yachts of the era.

Her elegant lines reflect early twentieth-century naval architecture.

Meanwhile, her steam propulsion demonstrates advanced engineering for the period.

Over the decades, several owners maintained and refitted the yacht.

Each chapter added to the vessel’s remarkable history.

Restoration Focused on Preservation

RMK Yachts approached the project as a conservation responsibility.

The team aimed to preserve the yacht’s character rather than reinterpret her design.

Therefore, the shipyard adopted a museum-grade restoration strategy.

Work began after the vessel arrived in Istanbul in October 2024.

Engineers then launched a detailed programme of inspection, conservation and repair.

The scope included structural surveys, mechanical overhauls and interior restoration.

Specialists also restored rigging, deck equipment and safety systems.

Despite the project’s complexity, the team completed the work on schedule.

Original Materials and Craftsmanship Retained

Where possible, craftsmen preserved original components.

These include Cuban mahogany joinery, brass fittings and bronze deck hardware.

The team also maintained the historic interior layout.

However, some elements had deteriorated beyond recovery.

Specialists rebuilt these parts using historically accurate materials and methods.

Engineers also treated the hull and superstructure.

These repairs protected structural integrity while respecting the yacht’s original construction philosophy.

Steam Propulsion System Presented Unique Challenges

The yacht’s steam propulsion system required careful restoration.

Engineers preserved the original configuration wherever possible.

However, some components required rebuilding to meet safety standards.

Specialist expertise in early steam technology remains rare.

Therefore, RMK Yachts sought external technical support.

Engineers from Tüpraş provided critical guidance.

Their involvement helped restore the system according to its historic design.

Historic Yacht Joins Major Maritime Museum

Following her relaunch, Cangarda moved to the Rahmi Koç Museum.

The institution ranks among Türkiye’s leading museums of industry and engineering.

Displayed in Haliç, the yacht will welcome visitors from around the world.

The vessel now stands as a rare surviving example of early steam-powered yachting.

Documentary Film Planned for 2026

A documentary about Cangarda and her restoration is now in production.

The film will explore the yacht’s heritage and engineering story.

Producers expect to release the documentary in 2026.

Restoration Demonstrates RMK Yachts’ Capabilities

The project highlights RMK Yachts’ ability to restore historically significant vessels.

The shipyard builds modern superyachts and complex refits.

However, the Cangarda restoration shows equal expertise in maritime conservation.

As a result, the project reinforces the yard’s reputation in both sectors.
