A Coventry University student has claimed a major international yacht design title with an innovative open-plan concept.
Finn Lortan, an Automotive and Transport Design student, won Young Designer of the Year after impressing leading industry judges.
Designers praised the clarity, detail and technical depth of his sketches and supporting drawings for his 60-metre Amiche day yacht concept
Organisers asked entrants to design a 60-metre day yacht named Amiche. The vessel needed capacity for 20 guests.
The brief also required two family cabins and extensive entertainment facilities.
More than 160 young designers entered the competition, which ran in association with Feadship. Lortan secured the overall victory.
Open-plan layout becomes winning feature
Lortan focused on creating a single connected entertainment space rather than multiple separated decks.
He explained the idea emphasised social interaction and visual connection throughout the yacht.
The design includes an integrated spa and opening beach decks. These features combine to form one large open leisure area.
Innovative owner’s cabin solution
The brief required a cabin with sea views but minimal motion.
Lortan positioned the owner’s suite on the upper deck. He added a gyro-floor system to reduce rolling and improve comfort.
The approach impressed judges, who highlighted both creativity and practical thinking.
Inspiration from real industry experience
Lortan said his interest in yacht design began with hands-on maritime experience.
He completed a deckhand course and learned onboard maintenance and operating procedures.
Later, he undertook a five-month internship at Du Toit Yacht Design in Cape Town. There he learned the fundamentals of yacht construction and design.
He described yacht design as complex but uniquely rewarding.
Career ambitions in superyacht design
Lortan praised Coventry University’s industry connections and professional networking opportunities.
He said the competition provides valuable exposure within the superyacht sector and supports his career ambitions.
His goal now is to work professionally in yacht design.
Coventry University’s growing reputation
The university continues to build a strong reputation in superyacht design education.
Graduate Amel Khsouma won the 2024 Superyacht UK Young Designer Competition at the Southampton International Boat Show.
Lortan’s success further strengthens the institution’s standing within the global yacht design community.
