Major Expansion at Nanny Cay Marina

Nanny Cay Marina, a marina and boatyard, in the British Virgin Islands has officially broken ground on a major expansion project.

Located on the island of Tortola, Nanny Cay offers marine services, resort-style amenities and full-service boat-yard support. In addition to charter and owner vessels, the marina serves as a regional hub for sailing and tourism.

As the home of the BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival, Nanny Cay continues to draw international yachts and contributes significantly to the British Virgin Islands’ marine and tourism economy.

The groundbreaking ceremony marks a key milestone in Nanny Cay’s growth as the BVI’s leading marine hub. The expansion will feature a bespoke Travelift designed for the latest 60-, 70- and 80-foot catamarans, plus 112 new slips for large catamarans, private sail and power boats, and superyachts up to 165 feet.

The symbolic event signalled the shift from planning into construction. The on-site ceremony welcomed government officials, local dignitaries and industry stakeholders including Premier & Minister of Finance Dr. The Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley, Governor Mr Daniel Pruce and Deputy Premier & Minister of Environment Honourable Julian Fraser.

New Travelift

The new Travelift and added berthing capacity will empower the marina to serve both local and visiting vessels more efficiently. It will particularly accommodate the growing number of large catamarans and super-yachts in the region.

This expansion marks a major leap not only for Nanny Cay but also for the wider BVI maritime sector. It positions the territory to remain competitive, resilient and ready for future yacht market demands.

The existing two marinas had reached capacity, so the need for additional world-class facilities became essential. The BVI is experiencing increasing demand from larger multihulls and monohulls, and this project was designed to meet that trend.

The development will create 91 new jobs and, in partnership with H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, launch a marine training hub for local youth. This investment further affirms confidence in the BVI’s economy, workforce and legacy as a sailing capital.

In addition to its full-service marina and yard, Nanny Cay continues to host the annual BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival, 2026 will mark its 53rd year, and remains a central pillar of the territory’s yachting and tourism landscape.

The expansion underscores Nanny Cay’s commitment to innovation, sustainability and service excellence in the BVI maritime sector. Once completed, the new facilities will significantly enhance the marina’s ability to accommodate high-quality marine infrastructure demand.

Initially unveiled in 2024, this major expansion project is estimated at over US$30 million and aims to transform Nanny Cay into the Caribbean’s premier resort marina. Key features include:

  • A new 112-slip marina on the south side of the peninsula designed for catamarans and superyachts.
  • Upgraded boat-yard and haul-out facilities capable of handling significantly larger vessels.
  • Expanded visitor amenities: new beach, high-end restaurants with panoramic views, luxury swimming pool, beach bar and retail village.
  • Community engagement: classroom facilities for the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College maritime programme, local job creation and support for the Royal BVI Yacht Club’s dinghy programme.

This expansion reflects Nanny Cay’s ongoing commitment to match the growing demand for high-grade marine infrastructure in the region. Subject to planning and construction stages, the project is expected to complete within three years.
