From stepping aboard as Deck Cadet to becoming Master, Star Clippers’ has appointed its youngest Captain yet.
The cruise line has announced the promotion of Vadim Novikov to Captain of Star Flyer. Eleven years after joining them as a Deck Cadet, the 36-year-old Russian-born officer now commands the ship as the fleet’s youngest Captain.
Novikov’s story began in 2013 when he first saw Star Flyer while training aboard the tall ship Kruzenshtern. The sighting inspired him to join Star Clippers six months later, marking the start of a remarkable maritime career.
His passion for sailing runs deep. Born into a seafaring family, Novikov spent his early childhood aboard training ships. His father served as Captain of the Kruzenshtern, and the vessel became the boy’s second home.
Classroom
“From a young age I was always around tall ships,” says Captain Novikov. “Instead of kindergarten, the training ship became my classroom. When I saw Star Flyer, I didn’t know ships like that existed. I spoke to the crew, and six months later, I joined Star Clippers.”
Since then, Novikov has risen steadily through the ranks. His promotion to Master reflects Star Clippers’ commitment to nurturing maritime talent and developing officers from within the company.
Fleet Captain Brunon Borowska, who marks 30 years with Star Clippers this November, stands as another example of long-term career growth within the company.
Another milestone
Captain Novikov is currently aboard Star Flyer, preparing for the sold-out transatlantic crossing with 166 guests onboard. The voyage will mark another milestone in his inspiring journey.
Star Clippers operates three of the world’s largest fully-crewed sailing ships. These elegant vessels combine the romance of traditional tall ships with the comfort and service of modern cruising.
