MotorCaravans Banned from Seaside Town

MotorCaravans have been banned from Seafront Road in Felixstowe during a summer parking crackdown

From July 7, motorhomes and campervans will no longer be allowed to park on Undercliff Road East in Felixstowe.

Suffolk County Council is introducing an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) to create cars-only parking bays on both sides.

The move follows safety concerns about larger vehicles partially parking on pavements and the promenade, causing damage and blocking access.

Local authorities say this has impacted wheelchair users, pushchairs, and pedestrians who rely on clear access along the seafront.

Alongside the cars-only bays, new dedicated spaces for motorcycles and blue badge holders will also be introduced.

Double yellow lines will be painted at junctions to improve road safety and visibility for all road users.

The ETRO will run during summer 2025, allowing for public feedback before any permanent measures are adopted.

To carry out these changes, parking will be restricted between June 30 and July 18 while new markings are installed.

Towed away without notice

Any vehicles left parked during this time may be towed away without notice, according to council statements.

Town councillor Seamus Bennett welcomed the move, calling the area a “free campsite” for overnight motorhome stays.

He said those in motorcaravans used local amenities without contributing, including emptying waste into public toilet facilities.

Meanwhile, chalet and beach hut owners were not permitted to stay overnight, despite paying for their properties.

Day-trippers have also complained about parking availability due to the presence of multiple motorhomes occupying spaces.

“This situation has caused growing resentment,” said Mr Bennett, “from beach users, residents and business owners alike.”

East Suffolk councillor Tim Wilson said the layout changes will increase car and motorcycle parking while improving safety.

Not suitable for large vehicles

“Undercliff Road East is not suitable for large vehicles,” he said. “This will encourage them to seek alternatives.”

Councillor Paul West from Suffolk County Council added the changes would improve safety and beach access for everyone.

“These improvements reduce damage and make access easier for all road and promenade users,” he explained.

Authorities are currently working on identifying an alternative parking site in Felixstowe for motorhomes and campervans.

Details of the alternative location are expected to be announced later this summer.
