Nagaland Hornbill Festival

Asian river cruise specialist, Pandaw, is offering a unique opportunity to visit the famous Nagaland Hornbill Festival.  A 13-night fully-guided land and river tour will take in the festival at Kohima. As well as an exploration of Nagaland. And an expedition along the mighty Brahmaputra river.

Vibrant festivals

The state of Nagaland is located in India’s northeast on the border with Myanmar. Often referred to as The Land of Festivals, it is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes. The state is home to 17 major tribes, each with its own unique traditions, languages and customs. The Naga tribes are known for their vibrant festivals, intricate craftmanship and fierce warrior traditions. One of the most celebrated events is the Hornbill Festival. this is held annually in December. It showcases the diverse cultures of the Naga tribes through music, dance and traditional sports. The picturesque landscapes, including lush hills and dense forests, add to the region’s allure. Making it a must-visit destination for cultural enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

The trip starts with the seven-night Brahmaputra cruise round trip from Guwahati.  It passes through the scenic Assam Valley.  Here UNESCO protected national parks and remote rural communities provide travelers with the most wonderful and authentic experience. Highlights include a visit to Nameri National Park to view the vast array of birdlife. Another highlight is the full-day jeep safari at Kaziranga National Park. Here guests can spot a number of protected mammals including the Indian one-horned rhino.  And, if they’re lucky, the Bengal Tiger! 

The visit to the Mayong Village known for its long-standing association with sorcery should prove intriguing. Assam is also home to a deep and colourful culture.  Guests will encounter both on land and onboard with dances and performances by local performers. 

Train ride

Upon disembarkation in Guwahati, guests will transfer to the train station where they will board the Janshatabdi Express to Dimapur. This is followed by a coach transfer to Kohima where they will spend six nights. In addition to spending two days at the Hornbill Festival, travellers will visit key sites from the iconic Battle of Kohima. It is often referred to as the Stalingrad of the East. Guests get to explore the culture and traditions of the Naga tribes at the Nagaland State Museum.  And hike to the summit of Mount Puliebadze which offers breathtaking views of Kohima.

Pandaw is offering two departures on 22nd and 29th November 2025 with prices from £6,847 per person. Price includes the seven-night Brahmaputra cruise on the RV Kindat Pandaw.  All meals, drinks and gratuities; all transportation in India are also included.
