Francesco Galli Zugaro, has sold a majority stake in Aqua Expeditions, to Ponant
Francesco Galli Zugaro has built up the small ship expedition company from a one ship operation on the Amazon river. Today, it is renowned for its river and ocean cruises in South America, Southeast Asia and beyond. The company has acquired several superyachts which it now runs as small passenger ships.
The Ponant Explorations Group specialises in expedition cruises in the small ships segment under 500 passengers. They currently run 11 ships all under the French flag. These include Le Boreal, L’Austral, Le Lyrial, Le Soléal, Le Lapérouse, Le Champlain, Le Bougainville and Le Dumont-d’Urville.
One of the company’s ships was seized by Somali pirates in 2008 while sailing from the Seychelles to the Mediterranean.
Backed by Artémis Group
This strategic acquisition is backed by Artémis Group, who own the Ponant Explorations Group. The company also controls the fashion houses Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, and Balenciaga. They also own Christie’s the auction house.
Aqua Expeditions currently operates small ships in biodiverse destinations. These include the Galápagos, Raja Ampat, Komodo, Spice Islands, the Mekong River, and the Peruvian Amazon River.
Will remain a shareholder
Francesco Galli Zugaro, CEO and Founder will remain as a shareholder. Along with his senior management team, he will continue to lead the company as a stand-alone business unit. He will continue to operate under the brand name “Aqua Expeditions”
This transaction comes at a pivotal time as Aqua Expeditions ramps up the launch of its East Africa itineraries. They explore the Seychelles and Tanzania, with a particular focus on the Aldabra group of islands.
