Clearing up the confusion: LeShuttle, Eurotunnel or Eurostar?

It seems there’s been a fair bit of confusion in recent press coverage regarding the Channel Tunnel and the services that run through it.

We’ve noticed that some travel articles (and a few headlines!) have been mixing up LeShuttle, Eurotunnel, and Eurostar—and we thought we’d clear things up to avoid any mix-ups.

So to clear up the confusion here’s the lowdown:

LeShuttle

LeShuttle was formerly known as Eurotunnel Le Shuttle until a rebrand changed its name in 2023.  It is the service for cars, lorries, and even campervans. It operates the vehicle-carrying shuttles through the Channel Tunnel. And yes, it’s owned by Getlink, the same public company which owns and operates the Channel Tunnel itself. If you’re driving across the Channel, you’re hopping on LeShuttle.

Eurotunnel

Eurotunnel doesn’t refer to any specific service but rather to the infrastructure itself: the Channel Tunnel. It’s the amazing feat of engineering that connects the UK and France, not a mode of transport. Also owned by Getlink.

Eurostar

Eurostar is a completely separate company. They run the passenger trains through the tunnel, using the same tracks as LeShuttle, but catering to folks travelling without vehicles. They’re are also a customer of Getlink and use the same Eurotunnel as part of their operation as does Le Shuttle.

So, to sum it up:

LeShuttle = the service for vehicles.

Eurotunnel = the tunnel itself.

Eurostar = the train service for passengers, a separate company entirely.

LeShuttle, formerly known as Eurotunnel Le Shuttle, has been carrying drivers and their passengers through the Channel Tunnel every day for the last 30 years. With up to 4 departures an hour, a travelling time of just 35 minutes and a range of ticket options, it’s one of the fastest and most environmentally friendly ways to take your car between the UK and France.

Reliable and efficient

It’s reliable and efficient, with frequent departures day and night, and a speedy journey time of just 35 minutes. You won’t have to worry about seasickness, or the weather, and you’ll have your own vehicle with you at all times, so you’ll be free to explore Europe or the UK on your terms.

LeShuttle ticket prices are per vehicle, so you can bring along up to 9 passengers in one vehicle for the same price. No confusion there! With no limitations on luggage, LeShuttle is a clear win for those who don’t travel light. Pack everything you need into your campervan and head to Folkestone or Calais!

LeShuttle is also one of the most environmentally friendly options available, as it generates fewer carbon emissions than air travel or ferries. LeShuttle is faster than a ferry and greener than a plane.

We know it’s a lot of “Euro-this” and “Shuttle-that,” but hopefully, this helps smooth out any confusion. We’re sure the last thing you want is to send you off in the wrong direction—though you might end up in France regardless!
