Campercontact Survey Charts Change in Travel Culture

We like surveys and the facts and figures they throw up and the one conducted by Campercontact is fascinating.

Campercontact operates a platform that connects motorhome owners with motorhome site locations, their service partners and other B2B companies.  They provide information on over 41,000+ motorhome sites in 58 countries via an app and website. The content is provided by the motorcaravan community of over 1.3 million owners across Europe.  They share reviews, photos and content updates.

The results from their most recent survey are interesting.  They show a significant increase in the proportion of motorhome owners who now prefer to book campsites in advance.

In the same survey of attitudes to pre-booking campsites in 2019, Campercontact found the demand for bookable sites was significantly lower compared to now.

Change in travel culture

In 2019, only 41% of Dutch motorhome owners had ever booked a site in advance.  Today that figure is 61%.

The same is true for Italy with 43% prebooking, compared to 67% today.

The biggest jump is in Germany.  There figures jumped from 36% in 2019 to 74% today.

France has the lowest scores of 32% and 50%, respectively.

While the survey shows a significant change in travel culture it could be argued that the numbers reflect recent record sales of motorcaravans in recent years.

Only the British it seems are accustomed to pre-booking.   In 2019 a whopping 72% did so.  Today the Brits remain the highest and most consistent with 74%.

Number one irritation

The survey also finds that the number one irritation was arriving at a campsite and finding it full.

“This increase in the number of motorhome enthusiasts booking their pitches in advance reflects a changing travel culture,” says Lars Smit, Commercial Director at Campercontact

He continues: “This trend shows how important it is for campsites and motorhome sites to be bookable in advance, so we recommend any site owners who want to be listed on our app and be bookable year-round to contact us.”
