In our long and continuing quest to find Boat Watchers Campsites we have found another. This time right besides the Kennet & Avon Canal.
To qualify as a boat watchers campsite it is essential that boating activity can be watched from inside a Campervan, Caravan or Motorhome.
What started out as research for someone less able than me to walk to the waters edge has resulted in us discovering that there is a real hunger for this information and I can feel a feature coming on that will later appear in a magazine.
Our quest to date has led us to Benson Waterfront on the River Thames and that came about when the delightful and nearby site at Clifton Hampden closed its doors to visiting vans.
We thought we had found another boat watchers campsite in the Pig Place on the Oxford Canal but that that was so awful we could never recommend that site. Then we found the Camping and Caravan club site at Walton on Thames which while it has river frontage, is somewhat devoid of boats and so that defeats the object for boat watchers.
Todays find, is Court Farm near Devizes and it is a Certified Listing open to members of the Caravan and Motorhome Club. That means because we are members of both clubs we have access to it.
Ideal for …
- For those with dogs
- If you enjoy peaceful stays
- Good canalised walks and scenic views
Why we stay here …
Attractive site adjacent to the Kennet and Avon Canal, with views to the Marlborough Downs.
We enjoy chatting to the passing boats on the canal where each of them is forced to slow down while someone operates by hand the swing bridge that spans the canal
Caen Hill Locks Devizes’ famous flight of locks is within cycling distance. Should you have a desire to see them but need to drive there you will find there is plenty of Campervan friendly parking at the top of the flight conveniently close to the other nice Cafe operated by the Canal & Waterways
Devizes itself is a cycle ride way along the towpath and if you get your timing right, you can enjoy the weekly market in the square each Thursday
Other reasons to stay
Things to do nearby include Avebury, Stonehenge, Salisbury, Longleat and Bath, all within an easy drive.
Coarse fishing is available within 0.5 miles – contact Devizes Angling Club. Access is by concrete road.
The Crown & Bridge Inns are nearby.
Downsides for some
For some Boat Watchers the lack of on site facilities like showers and electricity hook up is a show stopper but not for us
