Nestling in the cleavage created by the Pitons, the two huge mountains that have made the scenery of St Lucia so instantly recognisable, is Sugar Beach. Now a Viceroy Resort it is the second hotel we stayed in during our visit to St Lucia
We remember it as The Jalousie Plantation and it is without question located in one of the most spectacular sites in the world.
The resort is spread across more than one hundred acres of tropical forest unsurpassed for its natural beauty, with the only white sand beach in the area.
Formerly a working sugar plantation, the property has a long history of owners including Lord Glenconner, famously known for his friendship with Princess Margaret, and the once famous proprietor of the Bang Between the Pitons Restaurant.
The resort is currently owned by Roger Myers and completed a three-year multi-million dollar transition that saw the property re-branded and re-launched as Sugar Beach in late 2012, under the continued management of the Viceroy Hotel Group.
There are 67 Luxury Villas and Luxury Cottages, 8 Luxury Beachfront Bungalows and 11 Luxury Sugar Mill Rooms.
Nestled into the mountain side, the Sugar Mill Rooms are within close proximity of the main facilities and have the same plantation elegant styling of the Villas. Each has a private plunge pool and walled garden while the Superior Sugar Mill Rooms have the added benefit of a roof terrace.
The Beachfront Bungalows are right on the sands of Sugar Beach and are steps from the water’s edge.
All of the villas in the resort are built in small clusters and are furnished with a 4-poster bed, air conditioning, custom made furniture in white, flat screen TV and iPod station, enormous walk-in body shower, claw foot bathtub, separate WC and bidet, wooden floor in bedroom and bathroom, oversize plunge pool, pool terrace and furniture, mini-bar.
A number of privately owned Residences ranging from four bedrooms to one, are also available providing true home from home comfort and styling that reflects the individual tastes of the owner
