When an 11 metre yacht ran aground close by the airport in Nice Airport, officials where forced to close down the southern runway

The accident happened in the early morning of Saturday 30th May when the yacht with five crew on board hit the rocks. One person was injured during the grounding and was rushed to hospital for treatment.

Although the southern runway remained shut Saturday, air traffic at France’s third-busiest airport was unaffected all day, with planes taking off and landing on the northern runway instead.

Three landings were delayed for an hour in the evening when all air traffic was stopped for an hour to allow workers to set up a crane to remove the yacht.

Lieutenant-Colonel Yves-Marie Borde, an airport security official said, “This has happened before, and is a result of yachts navigating in an area where sailing is strictly forbidden.”
