Debora O’ Sullivan is a yacht product line manager for Chubb Personal Insurance and recently the company has become active in social media.
In a recent blog posting O’Sullivan points out the fact that the United States has not ratified the MLC to date.
She claims that has left many U.S. ship owners and operators largely unaware of the convention and how its requirements can affect yachts that enter international waters or ports.
While a yacht is located in U.S. waters, general maritime law, the Jones Act and the Longshore & Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act apply. However, upon leaving U.S. waters, the MLC will come into play.
