Silent running and vibration free are just two items from a long list of requirements the client has given to Iñigo Toledo of Barracuda Yacht Design in requesting a design study for an intriguing new 52m (170ft) Performance Motor-Sailer.
Despite first impressions of large and comfortable cruising yacht, this is still very much a performance-orientated design, benefitting from an ultra-efficient, super low-resistance hull, transferable water-ballast and retractable dagger-board.
Speed predictions lead Iñigo and his team to believe that upwind speeds in excess of 14 knots from 20 knots of breeze, at no more than 8° heeling angle, will be achievable.
The basis for the design is Barracuda’s proven and concept of large, multiple windows in the hull, superstructure, accommodation areas and main saloon – witnessed so successfully onboard the 32m Akalam, which launched in the spring of 2011.
The most important rooms in the boat, therefore, will benefit from an unparalleled sensory experience with amazing vistas of the outside world and plenty of natural light engulfing the inside.
In a break from tradition, aspects of the yacht’s General Arrangement see a number of changes.
For example, the owner’s suite takes up a raised position forward of the beam on the main deck, with balconies opening on either side.
This has freed space aft for a prestigious VIP suite with access to a large, private swim platform at the rear.
On the lower deck, four twin-bed guest cabins brings the total number of accommodations up to 12 people, plus a maximum of 12 crew, although, normally only 8 crew will be required for standard operation of the yacht.
Common areas include a centrally located fitness-studio/beach with water-level access on either side. On main deck level, large internal and external lounge-style seating and dining areas provide plenty of space for guests and family groups to socialise.
By no means underestimated within this design, requirements of the captain and crew have been admirably well catered for.
Besides generous private cabin spaces for the Captain and engineer, there is a large crew mess and galley area and ‘crew-only’ hatches and walkways ensure that crew will be able to carry out their duties in a discreet and unobtrusive manner.
