My Favourite Place The Grenadines

Cindy Brown Charter Specialist Ultra Marine
Part of the Windward Island chain in the Caribbean, the Grenadines extend from St. Vincent in the north to Grenada and are unquestionably a sailor’s paradise.
My first private charter as a broker was aboard a large sailing yacht sailing south from Young Island Cut in St. Vincent towards Grenada.  Personally, I could have stayed put in the Tobago Cays for the entire week!  It was off-season and very quiet so we really had a chance to sail, sunbathe, snorkel and explore.  Each island has something different from the glamour of Mustique to the ruggedness of the larger islands.
Bequia, is the laid-back sailors’ favourite with its boatbuilding history, make sure you try the local favourite tipples; Frangi Fever or Mango Potion at the Frangipani beach bar or even more exotic cocktails at Firefly.

Mustique, is a haven for international celebrities and business titans who find everything they want here.  Deserted cays, pristine beaches, clear, clean water for breathtaking snorkeling or diving and golf at the Raffles on Canouan.
Make sure you go drift snorkeling in the Tobago Cays, join Wednesday night jump-ups at Basil’s Bar on Mustique, lazily walk along secluded Salt Whistle Bay on Mayreau and take the tender up to Mopion, your own private island.
Lush green mountainous islands and uninhabited low-lying cays make the Grenadines one of the top Caribbean cruising spots.  I love sailing here between December and April, but do go in late January for the Mustique Blues Festival set up by local bar owner and celebrity Basil Charles.
Other ports you cannot miss out on include: Mayreau, Petit St. Vincent, Palm Island and of course St Georges in Grenada.

Although the Grenadines are a bit harder to get to, trust me, they are well worth it!
Cruise aboard the 46 metre Katya through Ultra Marine from US$161,000 pw.
